About The Amish In Iowa
| Many books have been written about
the Amish, their way of life and their faith. Some are quite accurate
while others tend to portray more of a "Hollywood" appeal. A
recent television so called "reality series" call Amish in the
City, did not give an accurate view of what growing up Amish would really
be like. There are many misconceptions about the Amish. A few are fostered by the "sensational" view, some are just either misinformation, or "non" information. The Amish, by virtue of their nature, won't "proclaim" or boast about themselves, which leaves many people to their own personal observations and conclusions. These inferences are drawn at times by simply a misunderstanding of the culture, or by trying to understand or explain the Amish given a "non" Amish background. An example is a common way of thinking that it's hypocritical that the Amish don't own motor vehicles themselves, but oftentimes are seen riding in one. To fully understand this, one would certainly have to acquaint themselves with the Amish way of thinking, their strong belief in the family structure, and the entire atmosphere that surrounds an Amish family. In this instance, suppose that your 16 year old has a disagreement within the family. Given the fact that most 16 year olds now have a drivers license and a vehicle, it's entirely possible with little effort that they could simply get in the car and leave the household. If they had to harness a horse, hitch up a buggy, and take considerable time to get anywhere, perhaps it would seem easier to resolve the issue. That example is an oversimplification, but hopefully brings about a few points to think about. |
